What is a swab?

A swab is a medical cotton swab that one uses, for example, to collect tests for viruses (such as COVID-19), microbiological samples and is used for forensic investigations. The swabs are sterilised and have a break point so that after collection, they fit into the tube containing medium.

What is a medium?

A medium is used for the collection, transport and long-term storage of viruses. It is designed to maintain optimal sample viability. A medium comes in a tube that can stand on its own and has a screw cap so you can place the swab in here after taking the test and then seal it neatly.

Swabs for various needs
