What is jute?

Jute is a long, soft and shiny plant fibre that is mostly used to stretch into coarse and strong threads. The fibres are off-white or brown and are one to four metres long. A jute fibre is extracted from the stem of the jute plant. Bundling the jute stems together and submerging them in running water releases the fibres and strips the stems.

Jute is also called golden fibre because of its golden colour and silky sheen. Jute is the second most widely used vegetable fibre in the textile industry after cotton. Jute is mainly produced in India and Bangladesh. Growing jute requires very little fertiliser or pesticides. This makes it a sustainable alternative to conventional cotton or nylon.
