An EPS box with lid (also called a Styrofoam box or Styrofoam box) is the perfect solution when you want to transport pharmaceuticals, medical products or biological substances safely and conditioned.

What is an EPS box?

EPS boxes are insulated packaging boxes. These refrigerated boxes are made of expanded polystyrene, better known as Styrofoam. This material has a high insulation capacity while being light and dimensionally stable. The thicker the walls of the box, the better the EPS box insulates. The EPS box also has high impact and shock resistance, which is important when transporting fragile medical equipment. EPS is insensitive to UV radiation, moisture and mould, so your products are always well protected.

When do you need an EPS box?

Due to their high-quality insulation properties, EPS boxes are well suited for transporting goods such as biological substances, pharmaceuticals and blood products. The insulation allows you to transport the goods chilled or frozen. By using an insulated packaging box, your goods stay at the desired temperature for longer. The thicker the walls of the EPS box, Styrofoam box or Styrofoam box, the better the insulating capacity. The boxes can be used for both cooling elements, gel packs and dry ice, but still need to be labelled appropriately.

Is an EPS box waterproof?

EPS (expanded polystyrene) is not naturally waterproof and has no capillary action, meaning it does not suck up water. Water can only penetrate under external pressure, as the material does not transport water via capillary action.

Application of the EPS boxes

The applicability of EPS boxes is very broad. Their high insulation value combined with insensitivity to moisture and low weight make them the ideal conditioned shipping packaging.

EPS boxes are mainly used for refrigerated shipping of food and medical items. A product that requires a constant temperature during transport is suitable for transport in an EPS box. Thanks to the right packaging and cooling, shops can send their products by post. In most cases, EPS boxes are supplied in combination with a cooling solution (e.g. dry ice) or a moisture absorption mat. For this, however, the EPS boxes must have the right labels. Within the pharmaceutical sector, EPS boxes and Styrofoam boxes are often used to transport refrigerated medicines. Within the medical/laboratory sector, EPS boxes are mainly used to send blood samples. The boxes with blood samples are packed according to the ADR P650 guideline.

The insulation value of EPS boxes is determined by the wall thickness. The size of the EPS packaging should therefore match the dimensions of the product to be shipped.
