Since 2020, the Special Roast coffee roastery has been working with DaklaPack on customised packaging that fits seamlessly into their production process. From artisanal roastery to trusted production partner
Special Roast was founded with a clear ambition: to deliver high-quality private label coffee with a strong focus on quality, sustainability and consistency. What began with just a few small batches per week has grown into a professional coffee roastery. Today, the company roasts more than 120,000 kilos of green coffee beans annually, resulting in a total production of around 175,000 kilos of coffee.

Packaging challenges in times of growth
As Special Roast expanded, the company faced a new reality: a growing customer base, diverse packaging preferences, and increasing volumes. Clients would supply their own packaging, varying in size, type and material - resulting in too many manual steps and extra machine adjustments. Every variation led to production delays and more material waste, which clashed with their desire for a more consistent, efficient and sustainable process.
The solution was to standardise without sacrificing flexibility. In close collaboration with DaklaPack, Special Roast implemented a packaging line based on fixed formats - compatible with multiple private label designs and fully optimised for their machines. By using one base format for different customers, they could personalise packaging with stickers while keeping the production line running smoothly. This saves time and reduces material waste. The result? A packaging solution that supports both the final product and the process behind it.
Custom box pouches for speed and flexibility
For Special Roast, packaging isn’t just about presentation - it’s about reliability in the production process. The selected coffee box pouches with degassing valve are a perfect fit: strong, upright and easy to process on the packaging line. DaklaPack supplies the pouches in three fixed sizes, with a 1000-gram version tailored to the production line and customer preferences. Additional sizes of 250 and 500 grams are packed manually. Each pouch includes a valve to preserve aroma and is personalized with a sticker.
Opting for a strong foundation
By using a uniform base design, Special Roast can now switch seamlessly between brands without resetting the machinery. Only the label and product change - the custom packaging stays the same. This approach reduces errors and minimises material waste, delivering efficiency and a clean, professional look for every shipment.
Giancarlo Matarazzi adds: “The filled pouches slide easily into the boxes, stay upright, and save us a huge amount of production time. We used to allow five working days - now we often deliver within one or two. Standardising helps us win across the board: in speed, consistency and presentation.”
Support with stock, cash flow and scalability
With an annual growth rate of 10 to 15 percent, flexibility in stock management and delivery is essential. Special Roast orders large packaging volumes in advance, but receives them on demand from DaklaPack’s warehouse. This saves space, improves cash flow, and reduces pressure on their internal logistics. Thanks to clear communication and short lines, the team can respond quickly to changing demand or replenish stock as needed.
